A greeble or nurnie is a small piece of detailing added to break up the surface of an object to add visual interest to a surface or object, particularly in movie special effects. They serve no real purpose other than to add complexity to the object, and cause the flow of the eye over the surface of the object to be interrupted, usually giving the impression of increased size. It is essentially the small detailed technical part of a larger object. The detail can be made from geometric primitives, including cylinders, cubes, and rectangles, combined to create intricate, but meaningless, surface detail. Greebles are commonly found on models or drawings of fictional spacecraft in science fiction.

A rather lengthy explanation )

To sum it all up, I’m looking for suggestions on different carbohydrates she can eat that do not include wheat, peanuts, soy, rice, or corn, and some kind of bread recipe would be absolutely fantastic as well. She can have yeast and potatoes, which helps a lot. Additionally, any good granola recipes or pasta recommendations would be much appreciated.
Thanks so much!

X-posted a few places.

10:24 pm - Coconut Cake

I set myself to the task of recreating my Grandmother's coconut cake this holiday. It was something my entire family looked forward to, but with her death the recipe was lost (we thought). After Thanksgiving I tried one recipe, but it wasn't quite right. I was getting set to try another when my Mom told me she had found a recipe card with my Grandmother's recipe. She sent it to me and I made it last Friday. It was like bringing a Christmas memory to life.

It's not exactly a traditional Southern recipe, since the frosting isn't a true seven minute frosting, but it's still damn yummeh. And it has absolutely no regard for health. It takes 17 eggs to make this cake.

03:24 pm - Your boyfriend sucks

Jim Halpert on Jezebel's list of the worst fictional dudes of the decade.
The Martyr: "Look, you're engaged to a guy who clearly doesn't give two shits about you, but I'm not going to cross that line. Instead, I'll just make puppy dog eyes at you all day, flirt with you incessantly, and book a trip overseas on the date of your wedding, even though we're supposedly BFFs and I should, in theory, be there to see you on what is supposed to be the happiest day of your life.

And let's say I do cross that line, and you don't automatically jump into my arms and declare your love for me. At that point, I'll move away, only to return with a girlfriend who is not you, even though I'm still completely in love with you and you've called off your wedding which is pretty much a sign that you're in love with me, too. After essentially using my new girlfriend for a few months, you'll finally declare your love for me, and I'll rush in to sweep you off your feet. After your art school dreams die, we'll get married and have a baby and I'll buy my parents house without asking you, because I know you'll love it.

We've got it all, baby! And all the two of us had to do was suppress our feelings for years and continue in adult relationships with people we didn't actually care for until we were finally ready to grow the fuck up and say something."

09:48 am - Considering Adopting a Cat?

Didn't get that kitty you asked for on Xmas? Please consider adopting Oliver! He's a bit over 1 year old, black and white, is ever so slightly cross-eyed (which is awesome) and ridiculously handsome. He's really playful, loves to be held, is very talkative and is always exploring.

He was brought into the animal hospital where my mom works and his owners claimed he was "mean" and wanted him put to sleep. My mom thought that was extremely unnecessary and decided to take him home and foster him. He's currently hanging out in my garage (occasionally sneaking into the house) because we already have a male cat, Scooter, who absolutely hates Oliver and is the reason why we can't adopt him. Oliver gets along GREAT with my dog and my other cat.

As for him being "mean," well, he isn't. He occasionally gets very excited and bites (which doesn't hurt) and then sometimes hisses. Anyone who has owned a cat knows this is just how some cats are. (I was just at a friends house last night and her cat did the same thing!) He isn't out to hurt anyone. He's just a playful cat who gets a little worked up sometimes. He just needs understanding owners who are willing to work with him...

If you are interested in adopting him, or know someone who might be, please message me or email me at gona87@aol.com! He is neutered, has all his shots, is FIV/FeLV negative and is in perfect health. He is currently indoor/outdoor but it shouldn't be difficult making him a completely indoor cat. He is currently in the Huntington area of Long Island but will travel for the right person/people :)

06:45 pm - Recipe Request

I was hoping somebody out there had some delicious recipes that call for a ton of honey. My in-laws gave us a wonderful basket full of goodies, but the only item I wasn't sure what to do with was the gallon jug of honey!

Savory or sweet, does anyone have anything that uses honey as a main ingredient? I drink tea, but not that often. It's going to take me years to use it all up! :) Thanks in advance!

03:44 pm - Cinnamon buns!

Last night I make cinnamon bun dough in the bread maker so we could have fresh baked buns this morning. They are chalk full of love and sooooo good!

09:39 am - APEX TECHNICAL

Has anyone gone to Apex Technical School's ASE Automotive Technician Program?

I have no experience with Automotive Repair but it's something that I've been thinking about doing.

11:59 pm - BJ Novak video search

Hey guys, a few months ago BJ Novak was on a late night show (no idea which one) where he read the back of a Honey Bunches of Oats cereal box. I told a friend I'd send it to him and I really can't find the video anywhere.

please help! thanks :)

06:18 pm - Anybody want a cat?

My sister's boyfriend picked up a stray cat. Somebody cut off his whiskers, poor thing. Who would do that to a sweet little kitty??? (A very sweet cat - you can even rub his tummy and he doesn't seem to mind! Who would have cut off the whiskers of such a trusting darling? Why would anybody do such a thing?)

Anyway, we can't keep a cat at the moment, too many people with allergies in the house. This little guy is an unneutered male. Judging from his size and his general behavior, I put his age at somewhere around a year, probably just under. He appears to be healthy, and I don't see any obvious signs of fleas. He's very sweet and friendly - actually, that's my only caveat about people wanting him. By the way he acts, it seems he's very much in need of attention. This might mellow down in time, at the moment he's a bit high-needs. If you're working 20 hours shifts, he might not be the cat for you.

We're on the North Shore of Staten Island, no car. Anybody who can come by here is welcome to get the kitty, or we can trek him into Manhattan or maybe a stop or two into Brooklyn on the train. I don't know how he'd be with another cat in the home, but my guess is he's young enough to adapt.

We don't think this is a neighbor's cat, I know most of the cats with people and I'm going to check with my two crazy-cat-lady neighbors (I'm the third, currently catless though I am, so I can call them that :P) because they're bound to know the remaining ones if they're outdoor cats. (Or indoor cats. One of them hands out coupons for reduced-cost neutering if she knows you have an unfixed kitty.)

Full Moon names date back to Native Americans, of what is now the northern and eastern United States. The tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full Moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred. There was some variation in the Moon names, but in general, the same ones were current throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England to Lake Superior. European settlers followed that custom and created some of their own names. Since the lunar month is only 29 days long on the average, the full Moon dates shift from year to year.

* January - Wolf moon only
* February - Ice moon
* March - Storm moon
* April - Growing moon
* May - Hare moon
* June - Mead moon
* July - Hay moon
* August - Corn moon
* September - Harvest moon
* October - Hunter's moon
* November - Snow moon
* December - Winter moon

04:11 pm - Giants get blown out...ramble about nothing

"Due to the Giants being blown out by the Panthers, the network has decided to take you to a more competitive NFL game..."

Yeah...Giants have no playoff potential as of probably 4pm this afternoon. Totally losing bad. Oh well...at least the anticipation is over? Think Ill be routing for Minnesota in the Super Bowl...if they don't blow it too. I love you Bret Farve.

I spent a little time yesterday googling/youtubing female kickers in the NCAA and wondering if I had potential for that. Granted, ive only kicked for rugby and its usually a position that people fight over so I always back down to stop any rivalries, but I was pretty good. I kicked for the select side team and eventually got the job in college and still take kick offs now. However, technique is a lot different, and timing is of no concern. The uprights are also in different places, so distance is difficult to gage. Some of the girls were very impressive in these videos. Very consistent even if they lacked the distance. I think I would have had the distance, but not the consistency. Then again, I also never practiced kicking so maybe I could have come more consistent? I often wonder, "what if." It really would have been someone to have played college football as a girl...

I think im only dreaming.

*************************

I decided I've gotten chunky and my New Years Resolution will be to get my ass back in shape. Kinda funny since my New Years Resolution last year was to spend less time at the gym. The past six months have lead to little motivation and time to work on fitness. I was much better off overdoing it than I am now. I still run about twice per week, and lift about once, but I need to do much, much more. Signed up for two more soccer leagues for Jan/Feb so that should be something. Rugby practices should start again in February too. I remember last year at this time I think I went a full month without going to the gym due to an overuse injury...then I went to C4 with duck tape basically holding my ankle together as we dragged fake dead bodies through the fake woods. I guess I could try to run before work...only im doing civilian rotations away from any military gyms for the next three months...except if im on call...

I also need to doing more extra reading outside of work. I always read up on patients and current recommendations, but I never do more than that unless someone tells me I need to. I just signed up for the APA today (finally) and was even reviewing a Stahl book during the game and looking at the psychiatryonline articles. Granted, some of this has to do with my patient schedule for next week.

I also am about to buy an iPod nano. I began the day knowing NOTHING about iPods. I've kinda always dodged the subject, but my friends have them and have been talking about podcasts and stuff so I figured I would look into it. I went to the Apple Website and the nano seems to have all my needs. Im honestly a radio person more so than a CD/tape person and it has that option. Im sure ill put some songs on it, but im more interested in getting podcasts that I can listen too while I drive to practices or walk to work...or whenever.

A lot of the reason why these resolutions need to be made is time. I just do not have much free time. I do admit that when I get home form work at night I often go on the computer for an hour before going to bed and I *could* be doing something more educational or productive, but its so difficult after a full day of work to focus on anything else. Eh...decisions, decisions...

03:22 pm - Living in NY. How to spend money wisely.

My biggest New Years Resolution is to be wiser with my dosh, so I'm looking at my finances where I know money can be saved or better used.

1) Time Warner versus Optimum. I want cable for tv, the computer and a land line. Which is the best value? TWC bills me a ridiculous amount of money each month and I can't believe there's not a cheaper way. I was also thinking of getting Netflix to my TV and getting rid of HBO, etc., but I hear since it's somewhat new they don't have a lot of movies...

2) Just my 2 cents. Anyone who hasn't joined Groupon and Living Social Deals... get on it!

3) Any deals whether food/drink/fashion/exhibits in NYC you know of that helps you enjoy this city a little cheaper?

4) What's the best cell phone service in your opinion?

5) Fresh Direct vs. Food Emporium vs. ???

02:15 pm - USC Gamecocks cake

It's my boyfriends 21st birthday tomorrow and I really wanted to do something special for him. He's OBSESSED with the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. He has USC shirts, hats, belts,  shoes (crocs, actually), even a golf bag. If it has the USC logo on it, he owns it.  So I really wanted to involve USC in with his cake. I searched online a bit and found the cute little cartoon Cocky and knew that I had to make a buttercream transfer. I was most proud of this. Especially that I changed his hands around so he was holding up a 2 & a 1 :D
It was a fairly easy process, aside from covering the 2 in fondant. I had a really hard time getting the fondant in that area up near the top--but I think was able to make it look semi-decent.
The 2 is vanilla cake (Magnolia)
The 1 and the sign are chocolate cake (pioneer woman)
both were filled with vanilla bean swiss meringue buttercream (HTEAC)

06:06 pm - Fruit Tart Cupcakes

Possibly the lightest, most delicious cupcake I have ever made, or eaten. It's moist, and soft, and ohsodelicious.

Did I mention that it's also perfect and summer-y? It is perfect, and I assume it could also be done for wintery months, for those of us in America.  And so, without further ado, I give you the fruit tart cupcake!
